Operation Sindoor 2025: India-Pakistan Face-Off Rekindles Regional Tensions

New Delhi/Islamabad – Operation Sindoor, a large-scale military initiative launched by India in early May 2025, has intensified already fragile relations between India and Pakistan. The operation reportedly began on May 3, 2025, following a series of border incursions and intelligence reports of increased militant movement across the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara and Poonch sectors.
According to sources within India’s Ministry of Defence, over 5,000 troops, supported by drones, artillery, and special forces, were mobilized in a coordinated strike targeting 12 suspected terrorist launch pads and 3 key infiltration routes in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Indian officials claim the operation successfully neutralized over 40 insurgents, disrupted communication lines, and uncovered arms caches allegedly linked to cross-border terror groups.
In response, Pakistan’s military has accused India of violating international norms and the 2003 ceasefire agreement. Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported civilian casualties in border villages, with 8 civilians killed and 15 injured due to alleged Indian shelling.
Political Fallout and Global Reaction:
- Pakistan has lodged a formal protest with the United Nations, seeking international condemnation and intervention.
- India maintains that the operation was a defensive counter-terror measure, not an act of aggression.
- The United States, China, and the European Union have urged both sides to exercise restraint and return to diplomatic channels.
Analyst View:
Defense analyst Brig. (Retd.) A.K. Mehra stated, “Operation Sindoor demonstrates India’s shift toward swift, high-impact tactical responses to terror threats, reminiscent of the 2016 surgical strikes and 2019 Balakot air strikes.”
